Well, that was an interesting way to kick off these Olympics! So where do we begin?
Nigeria's airline woes. After failing to pay a fee related to the charter jet that would take the Nigerian men's soccer team to Rio from Atlanta (coincidentally the host of the Summer Olympics 20 years ago), the team has been stuck in Atlanta, and when they take off, NBC has reported that they are set to arrive approximately seven hours before their first match. Can somebody say OOPS?
Canada's insta-goal. In the first match for the Canadian women's team against Australia, one of the team members scored a goal within the first twenty seconds of the match. Neat-o! But what isn't so neat is when another member of the team got sent off the field with a red card just minutes later. Despite being down one player, Canada went on to win the match.
Many injuries. And finally, in the opening match of Sweden vs. South Africa, at least three players (according to my count) were injured. Sweden won the match 1-0 over South Africa, but both teams will likely have a huge hospital bill to pay after the games.
That's all for now. So until tomorrow, goodnight from ROMVIEWS.WEEBLY.COM, your daily Olympic blog headquarters!
